{"id":193,"date":"2012-03-31T17:54:37","date_gmt":"2012-04-01T00:54:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fagelman.com\/?p=193"},"modified":"2012-03-31T17:54:37","modified_gmt":"2012-04-01T00:54:37","slug":"sweet-sam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fagelman.com\/?p=193","title":{"rendered":"Sweet Sam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sweet sweet Sam<br \/>\nWarrior Sam<br \/>\nI was green as a blade of grass<br \/>\nNew cop<br \/>\nRook<br \/>\nPuppy<br \/>\nWide eyed and wondering at the darkest corners of the night when I met<br \/>\nSergeant Sam<br \/>\nHe was such the mentor<br \/>\nTeaching the cop way<br \/>\nThe right way<br \/>\nThe warrior way<br \/>\nWe flew the night and conquered evil with our hearts out and minds open<br \/>\nSweet sweet Sam<br \/>\nEntering the Cambodian Donut Shop at 4 o\u2019clock in the morning and hearing the owner rush out<br \/>\nSergeant Sam Sergeant Sam<br \/>\nAnd drinks in the dusty morning after cleaning blood and grime and tears from our worn armor and discussing life<br \/>\nHe was the marrying kind<br \/>\nMarried Kim and then Debbie and then Cindy and then Amy<br \/>\nAnd I\u2019m sure he was questing for another when he slipped like sand in an hourglass away from here<br \/>\nAnd I can\u2019t help but picture him<br \/>\nResplendent in uniform or plain clothes or even at his last wedding with a crown of leaves adorning his head<br \/>\nWith that same smile just ready to break over the horizon of his lips and light his face at any given moment in time<br \/>\nSweet sweet Sam<br \/>\n21 years as guardian of the city<br \/>\nKeeper of the lights<br \/>\nDefender of good and<br \/>\nVanquisher of Evil<\/p>\n<p>Doing it right<br \/>\nDoing it kind<br \/>\nCompassion for others stacked up in his heart like 10 million ingots of gold<br \/>\nReaching he was always reaching and<br \/>\nSearching for Love<br \/>\nHe found it in his children always<br \/>\nRyan and Casey and Ashley and Garrett and Megan too<br \/>\nWhen he spoke of them I always saw joy reflected reflected reflecting in his eyes<br \/>\nSam Sweet sweet Sam<br \/>\nI feel your kindness washing over here and now a Tsunami of goodness picking me up lifting me up Carrying me forward past this moment past the pain of your passing past the space once solid but now Ethereal you occupy and my tears burn and sting but I am glad to have known you I rejoice in your helping to shape my mind my heart my soul and my life<br \/>\nAs you have so many others<br \/>\nSweet Sweet Sam<br \/>\nI know you dreamed of being a fighter pilot<br \/>\nSoaring on the clouds above in liquid air<br \/>\nHigh high above the earth<br \/>\nWhere the bluest blue meets the stars and kisses them briefly<br \/>\nSpinning and dancing and cartwheeling past and<br \/>\nGlimpsing Heavens Gate just swinging wide open for you<br \/>\nAnd calling you home<br \/>\nTime to go and give your love everlasting<br \/>\nAs a Warrior in the sky<br \/>\nWarrior Angel<br \/>\nWarrior Father<br \/>\nWarrior Husband and<br \/>\nWarrior King but mostly and always<br \/>\nSweet sweet Sam<br \/>\nA cop and friend I will never forget.<\/p>\n<p>for Sam Hilliard and Family February 5, 2002 by Harry R. Fagel<\/p>\n<p>Authors Note:  Sam Hilliard was a Sergeant with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department.  He passed away suddenly one morning, much to the horror of so many who loved him.
